why global missions?
We here at Grace Baptist are committed to transformationally live out the gospel here in Austin; yet the good news Jesus has given us is for more than just our local town and surrounding community. It is THE good news for the WHOLE WORLD! In Acts 1:8, Jesus gives one final command to the disciples before He ascends to heaven. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” We are his witnesses not just in Austin, but to the end of the earth. One of the ways we work toward fulfilling this command is by training, sending, equipping, and supporting missionaries who go to places we cannot all go, and there they share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
How do we support our missionaries?
- Prayerfully: As a church body we regularly pray for the needs of our missionaries and for God to Empower, Equip, Encourage and Embolden them in their ministries.
- Financially: We send regular financial support to give them the freedom to give the gospel with as few worries over financial needs as possible.
- Spiritually: Ministry on a foreign field with often few to no local supporters and spiritual counselors can be lonely and draining. We desire to be available and active in aiding the spiritual growth, protection, and encouragement of our missionaries.
- Physically: Occasionally an opportunity arises for some of us to go and visit and serve with them on short term missions trips. This is a wonderful opportunity as we get to learn of day to day needs and blessings our missionaries experience.

Get to know the boyds:
- What is the most unique food you have experienced on the mission field?
- Jonathan - I would that eating ants would be my high point. They taste like crunchy chocolate.
- Holly - I like cayeye, which is like mashed pototes made from green bananas.
What is one of the greatest blessings?
- Jonathan - Seeing one of our men who came to Christ here preach or teach the Word of God in our church.
- Holly - To see how God uses his Word to cause people to grow in Christ.
What is one of your hobbies?
- Jonathan - I love studying languages. My focus in the last few years has been modern Hebrew.
- Holly - I like making crafts and designing memes; and also taking care of all of my pets.
What is your favorite brand or type of chocolate?
- Jonathan - I'm not sure.
- Holly - Reeses Pieces
What book (besides the Bible) would you recommend every Christian should read?
- Jonathan - This is a hard question. I think that many of Augustine's works are worthwhile. A starting point could be his Confessions or On Christian Doctrine.
- Holly - Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles that Can Radically Change Your Family by Paul Tripp
What dream would you want to see accomplished on your particular mission field?
- To see the Colombia Baptist Seminary grow and continue to prepare many students for Christian service. To see the church we are currently serving in plant another church.
What do you miss most about the US?
- Our family
What verse has been impactful in your life?
- Jonathan - "Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel" (2 Tim. 2:8 ESV)
- Holly - "This God-- his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him." (2 Sam. 22:31 ESV)

- To use whatever is in my hands and heart for God's glory whether at mom's nursing home, Bible Study Fellowship, my aqua fit classes, church or neighborhood.

What is the most unique food you have experienced on the mission field?
- grasshoppers and chocolate covered ants in Thailand
What is one of the greatest blessings?
- Knowing that I can be a part of God's plan in fellowship with Him whether in HK or repurposed here in the US.
What is one of your hobbies?
- I'm an avid reader across a variety of genres. I enjoy doing an annual Christmas craft gift for each gal at International Women's Club. This year I am making cross-stitch bookmarks.
What is your favorite brand or type of chocolate?
- In HK I loved all the Swiss and Belgian chocolates parents would bring to school. In the US, I eat a few too many Almond Joys and Hersheys with almonds.
What book (besides the Bible) would you recommend every Christian should read?
- One I read very recently - Captive in Iran by Rostampour and Amirizaheh. Very interesting and challenging report from two women who were imprisoned for their faith.
How long were you in full-time service?
- 41 years in Hong Kong, 4 years prior to going to HK
What dream would you want to see accomplished on your particular mission field?
- To be a practical help and testimony with Muslim women and other people God has brought 8nto my life here in Omaha.
What do you miss most about the US?
- I'm here in the US. The things I miss about HK include the very rare shootings, my students at International Christian School and China Baptist Theological College, no sales tax, more walkability and the high hills and ocean.
What verse has been impactful in your life?
- Ps. 48:14 - God's guidance isn't limited to our "work" years or a certain location
